Ruth Series: The Great Kinsman Redeemer (Ruth 3:1–5)

Ruth 3:1–5

1 Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

2 And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.

3 Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

5 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.

Note: A broken and bitter Naomi returns to Bethlehem.

Note: She returned from a pagan land - Moab.

Note: Angry and upset at God.

Note: Naomi had become the talk of the town.

Note: Her husband and two sons had died in Moab.

Note: Her daughter-in-law Orpah returned back to Moab. To worship the false gods of her fathers.

Note: Ruth did not. By faith she trusted in Naomi’s God.

Note: Ruth became a believer.

I want to make it clear this morning that Ruth didn’t trust in a god or just another god. Ruth trusted in the One-True-God. The living God, compared to all the false gods in our world today.

Deuteronomy 4:35

35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the Lord he is God; there is none else beside him.

Isaiah 43:10–11

10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, And my servant whom I have chosen: That ye may know and believe me, And understand that I am he: Before me there was no God formed, Neither shall there be after me.

11 I, even I, am the Lord; And beside me there is no saviour.

Jeremiah 10:10

10 But the Lord is the true God, He is the living God, and an everlasting king: At his wrath the earth shall tremble, And the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

Note: This is the Creator God.

Note: The God who declares and it is done. No other religious book in our world contains so many detailed prophecies that have been fulfilled so precisely.

Note: The One who transformed nothing into something.

Note: But also the one who transforms lives everyday.

Note: Ruth went back to Bethlehem with her mother-in-law.

Note: They both had a need and Ruth acted.

Note: She went to glean corn from the fields.

Gleaning was a practice of collecting leftover crops from the farmers field. In Bible times, it was a law established by God to provide for the poor, widows, orphans and the stranger.

Leviticus 19:9-10

Deuteronomy 24: 19

Ruth and Noami had no source of income, and so, Ruth went to the field to glean.

Again, I want to remind you of the faithfulness of Ruth.

Note: Her initiative is rewarded.

Note: Can I remind you this morning that when we step out by Faith, God rewards that faith.

Hebrews 11:6

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Note: Ruth diligently sought the Lord.

Note: She comes to a field and it’s the field of a man name Boaz.

Note: This isn’t just any one. Nor is it just luck on Ruth’s part.

Note: God was directing her steps.

I don’t believe in luck for the Christian.

I believe that God has a will for our life and we are to follow that will.

Each day, if we do what God wants us to do.

Then 10 years down the road, we will be where God wants us.

I don’t believe it was the will of God for Elimelech to go to Moab.

Note: God brought Ruth to this field.

Note: She is introduced to the kinsmen-redeemer.

Note: We are introduced to an incredible picture in the Bible.
