A Sermon On A Christian’s Spiritual Battle: The Good Fight

Ephesians 6:11-13

Note: The Bible uses many analogies to describe the Christian life.

Note: We are running a race.

Note: We are a planted garden.

Note: We are on a journey or pilgrimage.

Note: We are a building, and Christ is the foundation of that building.

Note: We are a tree that produces fruit.

Note: We are a light that shines in the darkness.

Note: We are adopted into the family of God.

Note: We are sheep, and God is our good Shepherd.

Note: We are in a battle.

Note: Paul told Timothy that we are to be good soldiers of Jesus Christ.

Note: As good soldiers of Christ, we must endure the hardness that comes into our life.

Note: As we are on this journey of life, this pathway of righteousness, this race set before us, obstacles come into our life.

Note: Deceptions are along the pathway.

Note: Foes fight against us.

Note: So we are to fight the good fight.

1 Timothy 6:12

Note: Why is the good fight good?

A. It’s Good Because it Gives us Purpose.

Note: We are fighting for something that matters.

Note: We are fighting for that which is eternal.

Deuteronomy 30:15

B. The Good Fight Builds Spiritual Character

Note: The good fight helps us build our faith and grow spiritually.

Note: As we face obstacles we learn to trust in God, we endure hardness and it builds our faith.

James 1:2–4

A battling believer is always building.

Romans 5:3–5

C. The Good Fight Leads to Victory

Note: Though the battle is filled with difficulties and discouragements.

Note: We know that we’re on the winning side.

1 Corinthians 15:57–58

Note: Our battling is never in vain.

Note: Paul recognized that he had fought in a good fight.

2 Timothy 4:7

Note: Paul said that I had struggles, I had obstacles, I had difficulties, but it was a good fight.

Note: If you get nothing from this message this morning, I hope you understand that the battle that we’re involved in, is a GOOD battle, and is worthy of our involvement.

Several years ago, I went through a time of depression and discouragement.

I sought help, prayed, and asked God to help me.

But I struggled. I felt I was in a constant battle with my thoughts and emotions.

One day reading the Bible I came across 2 Corinthians 10:4.

The verse reminded me that not only was I involved in a physical and emotional battle but a spiritual one as well.

The negative feelings that I was experiencing were not just a random occurrence, but were being used by the enemy to distract and discourage me.

As I applied this verse to my life.

I saw God help me.

I saw lies and flaws in my thinking. And replaced them with the Truth of the Word of God.

I started to see that the enemy was trying to sabotage my faith and well-being.

Note: The battle rages around us.

Note: We need to be aware of the enemy that fights against us.

Note: So before we break down the spiritual gear that we are commanded to wear.

Note: Let’s give an overview of the battle that a Christian is involved in.
