Revelation 21:1–8 "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."
Note: It’s hard to ignore in the Bible the teaching of a place called hell.
Note: It’s the Greek word “Gehenna”
Note: The word hell or Gehenna means place of misery.
Note: I mentioned at the beginning of the series, that Satan and his demons were cast out of Heaven.
Note: Satan deceived Eve though Adam chose freely to disobey God.
Note: Adam's sin resulted in him being expelled from the Garden of Eden and being forbidden to partake of the Tree of Life.
Note: From that day, our bodies eventually die.
Note: Adam lived for 930 years with the threat of death.
Note: But God didn’t forsake us.
Note: He killed innocent animals shedding their blood as a picture of the ultimate Sacrifice of Christ, and clothed the nakedness of Adam and Eve.
Note: He promised Satan that His Kingdom would be destroyed by the seed of the Woman.
Note: So the Devil’s time is short.
Note: When the devil was cast out of heaven, his angels (as the Bible refers to them), or demons were also cast out.
Note: A third fell from heaven.
Note: Some of those angels were placed in a holding cell. Hell. Waiting for the day of judgment.
2 Peter 2:4 "For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment"
Note: Hell, often called the bottomless pit, outer darkness, and eternal damnation, was not originally created for humanity. But for fallen angels.
Note: The Devil is not omnipresent or all-knowing.
Note: But the devil does know what God has declared.
Note: He knows that one day he will be cast into the Lake of Fire.
Note: But the devil is no fool.
Note: He knows that his work to condemn humanity was cut off by the death of Christ.
Note: He knows his end is near.
Revelation 12:12 "Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time."
Note: So, Satan's busy - deceiving.
Note: He’s busy blinding the minds of people all around us, every day.
Note: Satan wants us to share in his same fate.
Note: He wants us to be separated from our God forever.
Note: The teaching of hell changes depending on who you ask
- The rationalist says, there is no God, therefore there can be no hell.
- Those who ridicule say, there may be a God, but it’s hard to believe that people are in hell.
- The religionist says, there is a God, but He is a God of love and therefore He would not send anyone to hell.
Note: What does the Bible say about hell? That’s what we want to know.
Note: No matter how hard it is to hear, we want to know the truth.
