John 6:32–35
32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
V48 – I am the Bread of Life
Note: Throughout the Gospels.
Note: Jesus made a series of profound declarations.
Note: Seven “I AM” Statements.
Note: Each of these statements reveal a distinct aspect of His divine nature and redemptive mission.
Note: These statements are Messianic revelations rooted in the Old Testament and fulfilled in Christ.
John 8:58
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
Note: It echos the divine name God gave to Moses at the burning bush.
Exodus 3:14
14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
Note: So the “I AMs” of Jesus are not some poetic language that’s used to describe the Lord, He is making a declaration to be God.
Note: That He is the eternal, self existent one.
Note: He alone can meet the deepest needs of our life.
I was reading a book lately and it listed what they claimed are the four deepest needs of an individual.
The book said that the greatest needs of a person were: support, stability, self-expression and significance.
It’s salvation that meets all of those needs.
When we become born again into the family of God, then we find that Jesus meets all of those needs.
Note: He is the “I AM”
Note: These statements are important because they:
First, point to Christ’s deity.
They also reveal his sufficiency.
But they also bring us to a place of decision. They call for a response.
Among these “I AM” statements of Jesus, is one of the most foundational needs - bread.
Note: So often in the teaching of Jesus he uses earthly examples to illustrate a spiritual truth.
Quote "Men, are nailed to the things of this life."
Note: We focus so much on that which is Physical and sadly we often neglect the things that will last forever.
Isaiah 55:2
2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? And your labour for that whichsatisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, And let your soul delight itself in fatness.
1 Timothy 4:8
8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
Note: We’re not talking about physical bread that meets a physical need.
Note: Jesus is speaking about Spiritual Bread which satisfies for eternity.
William Barclay said, “Here were people whose eyes never lifted beyond the ramparts of the world to the eternities beyond.”
Note: Jesus has just preformed 2 wonderful miracles.
Note: He transformed a boy’s lunch into a feast – and fed five thousand men.
Note: He perceives that they would take him by force and make them a king – 6V15 – He departed into a mountain alone.
Note: He compels His disciples to cross toward Capernaum
Note: And He comes to them
Note: In the midst of their great storm in life
Note: He comes to them walking on the water
Note: We see this great multitude of people seekingJesus (V24)
