Mother’s Day Sermon: The Tears of a Mother

Note: We are grateful for all the mothers that are present with us this morning.

Note: What a wonderful blessing to have a day that remembers the importance of mothers in our world.

Note: God created motherhood.

Note: When God created Eve. Adam named her Eve because she was the “Mother of all Living.”

NoteMothers don’t let the world try to convince you that your role isn’t important. It’s so important. Mothers have a huge influence on our lives.

Note: I am grateful for my mother’s love, prayers and compassion.

I heard about a missionary who was trying to stir up interest to get people to go to a foreign country to preach the gospel.

At the end of the service a woman was dragging a little boy behind her, told the missionary, “I just feel like God is calling me to be a missionary.”

“He is, indeed” and pointing to the little boy,

“And there’s the little heathen he wants you to preach to.”

NoteWhat an incredible opportunity we have to be missionaries in our homes.

Note: Mothers are a big part of who we are today.

Note: Notice what the Bible says about godly Mothers.

1. Mothers are to be Honored

Deuteronomy 5:16 “Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”

Note: Our Mothers are to be honored. They should be always honoured.

Proverbs 23:22 “Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.”

Note: They are to be respected and loved regardless of their age.

Proverbs 30:11 “There is a generation that curseth their father, And doth not bless their mother.”

Note: In a society that rejects God.

Note: The book of Romans teaches us that society as a whole, is characterized as a people that are disobedient to their parents.

‌2. Mothers Offer Comfort

Isaiah 66:13 “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; And ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”

Note: God’s comfort is illustrated in the Bible as how a mother comforts her own children.

Note: That motherly compassion, love and concern for their children is greater than any earthly bond.

Note: God recognizes that.

‌3. Mothers are Carriers of Life

Psalm 139:13 “For thou hast possessed my reins: Thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.”

Note: We would not be here today without our mothers.

NoteMothers experience a whole lot of pain to bring life into this world.

‌4. Mothers are Teachers

Deuteronomy 6:6–7 “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

Note: Our mothers have taught us many lessons in life. They have helped us to be loving, kind and full of compassion.

Note: But also hard working. Honest and godly.

Note: How many times has a mother prayed for and with their children.

Note: Read them stories from the Bible.

Note: Given their child Bible truths to help them in life.

2 Timothy 3:15 “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

Note: But mothers are humans with a sinful nature. They are not perfect.

Note: I am not lifting them on a pedestal of perfection, but highlighting the importance a godly mother is to any child.

Note: A godly mother always wants their child to follow and honour the Lord.

Note: We know that motherhood is hard. Parenting is hard.

Note: Many tears have flowed down a mothers cheeks because of their child.

Note: Eve wasn’t the only mother affected by the curse of sin. Suffering has spread throughout motherhood in all the world.

Note: Believing Mothers suffer today. I wish that it wasn’t true. But it is.

For as long as there have been mothers, there have been tears. Mothers carry a special burden for their children.

Note: Notice in the Bible the tears of a mother.
